What is a Tummy Tuck?

A “tummy tuck,” also known as an abdominoplasty, is used to help create a flat, youthful, rejuvenated abdomen and thinner waistline.

The muscles of the abdominal wall are usually tightened, and any small hernias can be repaired as well. The abdominal wall tightening, or “plication,” is especially effective after post-pregnancy changes to create the beautiful hourglass figure you’ve always wanted that is smooth, flat, and feminine. Male patients may also be interested in a male tummy tuck procedure to remove excess skin and fat and to tighten abdominal muscles as well.

Who is the ideal candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck is an excellent option for patients who:

  • Have excess skin and stubborn belly fat in the lower and mid abdominal regions
  • Suffer from abdominal wall weakness or rectus diastasis (either due to pregnancy or age)
  • Desire a smoother, flatter abdomen
  • Would like to have a smaller waist and “hourglass” figure
  • Are post-pregnancy with any or all of the changes above

Post-pregnancy changes are some of the most common reasons patients seek an abdominoplasty. Pregnancy causes laxity of the skin, soft tissues, and abdominal wall musculature that can be corrected with a tummy tuck.

Tighten Skin

As the body ages, the skin, soft tissue, and abdominal wall muscles age as well, resulting in laxity. Unfortunately, the laxity of tissues cannot be treated by lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet, exercise, or weight loss alone. Other methods may remove only fat, but do not significantly tighten tissues (such as non-surgical weight loss methods, CoolSculpting, or liposuction alone), fail to treat the laxity of tissues, and can even worsen the problem. A tummy tuck will treat sagging or laxity of abdominal skin, while these other methods of fat loss will not.

Muscle Repair

Some women may have "rectus diastasis," where the rectus abdominis muscles (or six-pack ab muscles) have spread apart, resulting in a bulge in the central abdomen, weakness, and possibly even abdominal or lower back pain. This is common after childbirth but can also be seen in patients who have not had any children. These patients with isolated rectus diastasis are also candidates for abdominoplasty, even if they don’t have skin laxity.

Hidden Scar Tummy Tuck™

Dr. Richland's trademarked Hidden Scar Tummy Tuck™ utilizes an ultra low incision hidden in the bikini line. The incision made by Dr. Richland is usually 4-8cm below where most women have their current C-section scars, where it can be completely hidden in even the smallest bikinis and intimate wear. For most patients, this is preferable to having a large scar across the mid-abdomen, which is standard for most other tummy tucks. During the surgery, excess abdominal skin is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and any small hernias can be repaired if necessary as well. Additionally, liposuction of the back and flanks is often combined with a Hidden Scar Tummy Tuck™ to allow for improved contouring and a thinner waistline.

Dr. Richland has pioneered this innovative technique by utilizing a different design for this incision than most other surgeons. This allows him to keep the incision lower and hide it better in natural anatomic boundaries, giving you the flawless look you have always wanted.

Traditional Tummy Tuck

A traditional tummy tuck utilizes an incision across the abdomen from hip to hip that may be visible when wearing a low-cut bikini or underwear. While excess skin is still removed and abdominal muscles can be tightened with this procedure as well, the disadvantage compared to Dr. Richland's Hidden Scar Tummy Tuck™ is that the incision is much higher and more visible.

Mini-Tummy Tuck

In this procedure, a smaller incision is made, and only the tissue laxity below the umbilicus (belly button) is treated. Candidates for this surgery are generally those who have excess tissues or laxity only below the umbilicus. The loose skin below the belly button is removed, and the lower abdominal muscles can be tightened, resulting in a flatter, slimmer, and more toned lower abdomen. Mommy Makeover

A tummy tuck can be combined with a breast lift or breast augmentation to create a “Mommy Makeover.” This is especially desirable for patients looking to get their pre-pregnancy bodies back.

Liposculpture with or without Renuvion

Younger patients in their 20s to 40s, who have excess adipose tissue without severe skin excess may be candidates for liposuction with or without Renuvion. However, patients with severe skin excess and tissue laxity will generally require an abdominoplasty.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

As a highly customizable treatment, the details of your tummy tuck procedure will be determined by your unique treatment plan. In general, abdominoplasty is performed under general anesthesia and involves the meticulous removal of excess skin and fat. Depending on your needs, Dr. Richland may also tighten your abdominal muscles to restore strength and enhance the aesthetic quality of your results.

The size and location of your incision, as well as the amount of tissue removed, will depend on your preferences and anatomy. In any case, Dr. Richland will sculpt your midsection with seamless, natural-looking results in mind.

Recovery

Tummy tucks can be outpatient procedures, although you may wish to spend one night in a surgery center or recovery facility, depending on your preference and the specific nature of the procedure.

Dr. Richland will provide you with detailed instructions on how to optimize your recovery. You will be able to move around a little the day after your procedure and more with each passing day, although you will feel some tightness for the first week or so after your surgery. Tummy Tuck Results

In the weeks following your procedure, it is normal to experience some soreness, bruising, and swelling that will decrease gradually. You will need to rest to allow for optimal healing. However, it is crucial that you are up out of bed several times a day, but not engaging in long walks or strenuous activity. Most of our Newport Beach tummy tuck patients are able to return to desk jobs after several weeks. However, you will need to wait four to six weeks for exercising, heavy lifting, or other strenuous activities.

Your results will be immediately visible, however, like any surgical procedure, it will take at least four to six months for the swelling to subside. Your results will continue to take shape and refine over the first year. You can maximize the quality and longevity of your results by maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and avoiding weight fluctuations.

Do I need liposuction or a tummy tuck?

Patients with isolated adipose tissue and tight to moderately tight skin are great candidates for liposuction with or without Renuvion. If you have severe excess skin, you will generally need a tummy tuck procedure to remove the excess skin.

Can I have a mini-tummy tuck?

Patients with excess tissues or laxity only below the umbilicus may be a candidate for a mini-tummy tuck. In this procedure, a smaller incision is made, and only the tissue laxity below the umbilicus (belly button) is treated. This procedure has a shorter recovery time. During your consultation with Dr. Richland, you can discuss if you are a candidate for this procedure.

Where will the tummy tuck incision be?

The standard incision travels from hip to hip through the mid/lower abdomen. However, Dr. Richland utilizes a Hidden Scar Tummy Tuck™ to keep the scar extremely low and below the bikini line. The incision made by Dr. Richland is usually several centimeters below where most women have their C-section scars. Most patients prefer this to having a large scar across the mid/lower abdomen, which is standard for most tummy tucks.

Can I get pregnant after a tummy tuck procedure?

Yes, you may be able to get pregnant after an abdominoplasty. However, it is not recommended. The abdomen will not be able to expand as usual during pregnancy, and the stitches may tear. The best option is to wait until after pregnancy to have a tummy tuck.

How long does a Tummy Tuck last?

The effects of your tummy tuck can last years, decades, or longer with proper care and a healthy lifestyle.
